Carl was born in the West Pratt Community of Dora, Al. the
son of George Marion Hicks and Bettie Mathis Hicks. He enlisted in the United States Army April 27, 1943, at Cordova, Al. He sustained injuries while serving in the military overseas and returned to the United States in 1944. He was admitted to a military hospital in Texas. He returned home to Dora the latter part of 1944.
